Raphaël Caucheteux on his record: "If I only scored three goals, I would be upset"

Raphaël Caucheteux on his record: "If I only scored three goals, I would be upset"

He has scored 2,639 goals in the first division. Raphaël Caucheteux has been setting his own record since September 21, 2016, when he surpassed Anouar Ayed's 1,226 goals. A mark he has continued to break with each match and which will be set at the final whistle tonight.

"Individually, it's my pride and joy, and I hope to hold onto this record for as long as possible, " the Montpellier native announced. "I can go out with my head held high. During my career, I wanted to be the best player, the best scorer. I would stump my teammates for wing passes, counterattacks... I built myself up by setting goals in every match. I had to score seven goals. If I only scored three, I would be upset. I've always had that mentality. When you reach 1,000 goals, you'll go after the record, and so on..."

On April 12, 2017, he even scored 17 goals against Saran, a statistic that was unprecedented at the time (now beaten by Benjamin Richert with 19 goals). His most prolific season will remain 2021-2022 with 202 goals in 29 matches.

Of all the times he's found the net, the serial goalscorer remembers a few goals that have left their mark on him: "I scored a goal on a whirlwind pass in Nantes, at the end of the match, after a defeat in the European Cup. We arrived there with seven players. Rare (Fortuneanu) played as a pivot. It was a very important victory for us. There were a few at the last second or from penalties, or even a European Final Four where I scored 23 goals in two matches."
